At Sand Springs Public Schools, the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families is always our top priority — especially when severe weather threatens our community.
Oklahoma’s storm season is officially here, and we want to remind everyone of the precautions and procedures we have in place to keep our schools safe and to ensure families are informed during severe weather events.
Our Severe Weather Procedures
Our school administrators and district leaders follow a detailed emergency operations plan that includes:
Weather Monitoring
When the threat of severe weather is present, our district closely monitors weather conditions in partnership with local emergency management and trusted meteorologists.
Communication
Urgent updates are communicated through automated phone calls and/or text messages, the Sandites.org homepage, and posts on official district social media channels. Please ensure you receive timely notifications by updating your contact information in Infinite Campus.
Shelter Protocols
Each campus has designated safe areas for students and staff in the event of a tornado warning or dangerous weather. Safety drills are conducted regularly throughout the year. Our staff members are trained to follow lockdown, shelter-in-place, and evacuation procedures as necessary.
Transportation Decisions
If severe weather is imminent at dismissal time, we may delay bus routes or dismissals to ensure the safety of students who ride buses or walk home.
What Families Can Do
While we have plans in place at school, we encourage families to also be prepared at home. Here are a few helpful reminders:
Keep your contact information updated in Infinite Campus.
Follow Sand Springs Public Schools on social media and download the Sandites app.
Discuss your family’s weather safety plan so your child knows what to do if severe weather happens outside of school hours.
Remind students to take drills seriously. Practicing helps us all stay calm and safe when seconds matter.
Early Dismissals
In the event that early dismissal is unavoidable due to inclement weather, the decision to dismiss early shall be communicated through automated phone calls and text messages, the Sandites.org homepage, and posts on official district social media channels.
If early dismissal is necessary, the Director of Transportation will make all required arrangements regarding bus transportation.
We’re in this together.
Severe weather can be unpredictable, but by working together and being prepared, we can help keep our students and community safe.
